May is National Building Safety Month

This is the 38th year of celebrating Building Safety Month! This initiative of the International Code Council. This is an opportunity to educate insurance and commercial property professionals and the public on creating a safe, resilient, affordable and energy efficient homes and buildings. It is important to understand how codes and code officials improve and protect places we live and work.
Some important disaster Safety and Mitigation tips highlighted are:
- the importance of having code approved and tested shutters that provide protection from windbourne debris if you live in a high wind or hurricane prone area
- building or retrofitting to create a tornado safe room in your home following ICC/NSSA 500 standards
- removing dead grass, leaves, twigs, etc from areas within 30 feet from buildings in areas that are prone to wildfires
- refraining from driving through flood waters due to not knowing what may be underneath the water or the true depth of the water
